What & Why

So at some point, you’ve got to be asking yourself, “What is this Glogeffect you speak of and why would I want to Glog?” That’s a very good question and this is the place where I will attempt to answer it.

Q: What is a glog?

A: A glog is a word I made up. It’s similar to the word “blog” in that it is a combination of two words. Where blog is derived from web log (or weblog), glog is derived from gratitude log. Now this isn’t log like the a sawed off piece of a tree, but like log as in to journal. “Gournal” just didn’t sound to great, but glog seems quite easy.

Q: When did you start glogging?

A: My first ever glog was February 2, 2007. More than a year ago. I was in a real personal crisis. A few days earlier, I had a four hour IM session with a friend I hadn’t talked to in years. The parallels in our lives were amazing. It seemed she’d encountered many of the same crises as I, perhaps in a different flavor, but practically the same. The only difference - she’d had about a 2 year head start. I was learning from her experience. The next day, I received a “Gratitude Journal” email from her. In it, SHE thanked ME for the conversation and what and reconnection. In her example, I learned the immediate power of gratitude and in her words learned the long-term joy and contentment she was creating for herself. At the same time, I’d just really gotten hooked on blogging. So, the next day, I set it all up off my personal domain: glog.mydomain.com… Glogging was born - for me at least.

Q: Why do you glog?

A: I’ve written a couple of posts regarding my thoughts on gratitude and what it’s all about.  In fact, for me, there’s no coincidence that I’ve chosen “Maslow” as the name of my glog.  The short answer is that glogging is a great way to set your mind on the things that matter.  You decide what matters.  Choose the good and be grateful.  Some believe that this creates more good, but for me, it’s about capturing the positive in my day.  I’ve found that glogging actually helps me to remember events and even small details better, more vividly, and even more fondly.  It’s my snapshot of a day.  Not ever day comes up roses, but there’s no sense in focusing on the negative.  Acknowledge, learn, appreciate the opportunity to learn, and move on.  In my glogs, you will often find something that might not necessarily be a positive event.  By learning something about myself or someone else or people in general, I make the event what I want it to be.

Q: What was one of the first benefits you noticed when you started glogging?

A: The first time I glogged it was like a breath of fresh air.  Immediately, I realized that I was in control.  I had the reigns to decide what was important to me from and for each day.  It’s all at my fingertips.  Literally.  The power of a complement is amazing.  The great thing about glogging is that it can be a solo affair or you can praise someone specifically or an event or whatever.  You can get mushy and sentimental or straight to the point.  You can share your glog with the world, just a few people, or keep it all to yourself.  However, the first benefit was control over my contentment.  I realized that life isn’t just coming at me.  I am also making it happen.

Q: Do you continue to glog and, if so, why?

A: Glogging isn’t a fix.  It’s a change.  I changed how I am viewing my life.  Though it’s hard for me to glog every day, I find that the more I glog about what I appreciate and what I want to achieve, the more I receive to appreciate and the more I achieve.  I continue to glog because I glogging has made such a positive impact on the way I receive people and view life.  Glogging makes me a better parent, spouse, and friend.  I am more sensitive to others because I understand what affects me.

Q: The big question.  Why Glogeffect.com?

A: A long standing goal of mine is to make a positive impact on the lives of others.  Not just one or two people, but I would like to help as many people as possible.  Glogging is just one way to change your life.  As glogeffect.com develops, I hope I can help you in the same way a dear friend once helped me.  All you have to do is sign-up, login, and start with 5 easy words: “Today I am grateful for.”
